According to the American Bar Association, African American men and women combined make up only 5% off all licensed lawyers working in the United States, today. That is a shockingly small percentage overall. However, that number is expected to grow exponentially over the next decade. This is because the number of black attorneys is increasing each year and as such, these professionals are making their mark on the American legal system. We are seeing more and more, black attorneys rising to the top positions in their fields. They are increasingly making their way into positions such as the president of Bar Associations, owning their own firms, and of course, they are winning cases and orchestrating settlements for millions of dollars in law cases consistently.
Beyond just African American lawyers, the number of black women in law is growing more each year. With record breaking numbers reflecting that more black women are choosing to attend, dominate, and graduate from law schools all over the country. This change reflects a much needed push for diversity in our legal system, that has been a long time coming.
